Although using Fluorescent and High Intensity Discharge [HID] Lamps saves energy and thus saves money, they do present special disposal considerations. Fluorescent and [HID] lamps contain mercury which is a toxic metal that can accumulate in living tissue and cause adverse health effects. Disposal of mercury gets into drinking water, lakes, rivers, and streams. This is a clear threat, not only to human health, but to the environment.
The other side of the concern is to the overall health of your company. Local and State envirnment regulations along with EPA enforcement of the Resource Conversation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) may put your company at risk of severe financial penalties if products which contain mercury are improperly recycled.
